How to Care for Your Denim (and Why You Are Washing It Too Often)

How to Care for Your Denim (and Why You Are Washing It Too Often)

People wash jeans after every wear and wonder why they fade and lose shape within a year. Treated properly, good denim lasts the better part of a decade.

Wash far less than you think

Frequent washing strips the indigo unevenly and weakens the cotton. Air them out between wears instead.

  • Turn the jeans inside out
  • Use cold water and a mild detergent
  • Wash on a gentle cycle or by hand
  • Hang to dry, never tumble dry
  • Spot-clean small marks
